Spurs’ chance to finish in the top four

While most of the attention was on Klopp prior to kickoff at White Hart Lane, it was Tottenham that played the better football.A 0-0 draw ,it was Spurs that carved out the better chances apart from Origi’s header off the crossbar.

Spurs quietly went about their transfer business in the summer making smart additions notably that of Toby Alderweireld and Son-heung Min. Much needed defensive solidarity has been established with the two Belgian center halves, Alderweireld and Vertonghen conceding 7 in 9 as compared to 13 last season. And the insertion of Eric Dier to midfield has also been a smart move as it provides more protection to the back four and allows others the license to go forward.

The only team unbeaten since the opening day, Pochettino will rue the missed chances against Liverpool but despite that he knows that this season might be the season when Spurs finally get Champions league nights back to the Lane. Though Harry Kane continues to struggle in front of the goal, £22 million man Son gives them a new dimension in attack.

His off the ball running is bound to free up space for Kane and others to run into and his eye for goal and pace takes some pressure off Kane’s shoulders. The korean has already become a fan favorite after his winner at White Hart Lane and a brace in the Europa league and Qarabag.

While many may argue that Sturridge and Benteke’s absence helped Spurs, the absence of midfielders Ryan Mason , Bentaleb and Son meant that Tottenham too were unable to field their best XI.With Bournemouth and Villa in their next two premier league games , they’ll be hoping for maximum points before the mouthwatering north london derby at the Emirates.

Spurs have in the past few seasons struggled against sides in the top 6 with just 8 points last season from a possible 30 while they have already managed a big win over Manchester city in this early stage of the season.

Son’s addition to the midfield coupled with Lamela’s resurgence and the indomitable rise of Dele Alli can turn this into a huge season for Spurs. And Chelsea’s demise leaves room for other teams to creep into the top 4. Their high fitness levels too will be a huge factor in determining their fate. Their thumping win over City laid down a certain marker and the youngest team in the premier league has probably the best chance in recent years of finishing in the top 4.

Will Pochettino take them to dreamland or will they again fail to balance Premier league and Europa league ? Time for the Poch to deliver on his promise.
