Champions League Round- up Day 1


In North London, Arsenal kickstarted their champions league campaign with a 2­-0 win over previously undefeated Bayern Munchen. Substitute Olivier Giroud headed home in the 77th minute before Mezut Ozil ensured 3 points in overtime after Hector Bellerin’s great work on the right side.

In Zagreb , the match seemed to be heading towards a stalemate before Brown Ideye scored in the 79th minute somehow managing to beat Goalkeeper Eduardo from an acute angle to hand Olympiacos a 1­0 win over Dinamo Zagreb for their second consecutive win.


Reigning champions Barcelona won 2­0 away to BATE Borisov courtesy of a second half brace by substitute Ivan Rakitic as he followed up his ferocious first by a subtle dink over the keeper to wrap up all three points and take control of the group.

Bayer Leverkusen and Roma shared the spoils in an 8­ goal thriller. A penalty and a close range finish from Javier Hernandez gave Leverkusen a 2­0 lead inside 20 minutes only for the half to end 2­2 courtesy of 2 scrappy goals by captain De Rossi. Roma came out firing in the second half as Pjanic’s freekick followed by Iago Falque’s goal made it 4­2. But Leverkusen hit back with Kevin Kampl’s amazing strike followed by Mehmedi’s goal to make it 4­4 in a 4 minute blitz.


In Portugal, Porto scored 2 first half goals as they beat Maccabi Tel­aviv 2­0. Vincent Aboubakar opened the scoring before setting up Yacine Brahimi for their second.

In the other group G match , Dynamo and Chelsea played out a goalless draw with Hazard and Willian both hitting the woodwork.


At the Mestalla, Valencia beat Gent 2­1. Feghouli opened the scoring before Foket hit back for the visitors. A Mitrovic own goal on the 72nd minute sealed the three points for the hosts.

Zenit St. Petersburg made it 3 wins out of 3 with a 3­1 victory over Lyon. Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette cancelled out Dzyuba’s goal before second half goals from Hulk and Danny put them in control of group H.
