Manchester United picked up just a point in a goalless draw played at Selhurst Park this Saturday and had critics surround Wayne Rooney and his role as a striker and his ability to score goals and create chances.
United splashed 36 million on Anthony Martial this transfer window which raised many questions regarding the boss’ decision to spend a huge amount on this youngster. While he has silenced his critics with his amazing skill set and finishing ability, Wayne Rooney’s form has gone from bad to worse.
Rooney failed to register a shot on target at the Manchester derby and gave the ball away a bit too much. He lacks composure and fails to connect with his teammates. Instead of his preferred position as a striker, Martial has been shifted to the left by Louis Van Gaal after Memphis’ poor display of form. Martial, who made his impact by finding the net against Liverpool and then scoring a brace against Southampton, offers pace and has become every defender’s nightmare whereas Rooney had a passing accuracy of just 55% against Manchester City and was dispossessed six times which shows how ineffective he has become.
Van Gaal has to make a huge decision regarding Wayne Rooney ahead of the champions league clash against CSKA Moskova at Old Trafford as United cannot afford to lose or even draw this fixture. He has to realise that Martial needs to be played at his preferred position as he has shown great potential and should be given more chances instead of Rooney who, according to Van Gaal, will be played whenever he is fit and available.
