The race for the top 4 this season is indeed an interesting one, while nearly champions Leicester City have secured a spot in the Champions League, and Tottenham Hotspurs should not have a problem doing the same, the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th spots are up for grabs.
So first off, here are the teams occupying the spots currently
TEAM PLAYED POINTS
It’s pretty clear that United and West Ham have an extra game to play, perhaps the one against each other and that is what makes this more interesting.
Now, let’s consider what could happen in the three matches that City and Arsenal would play and since they are at the same number of points, we can consider the same cases for both
With W=Win, L=Loss, D=Draw, here is a projection of points for each scenario
No need to remember or calculate stuff right now, just keep it in mind
Now, for United, who have 4 games to play, these are the cases
Finally, West Ham, who do seem to have a narrow chance of getting into the top 4
Alright, numbers numbers numbers, but don’t worry, I’m not asking you to calculate anything.
Basically, City and Arsenal need to win all their remaining games which would not be possible since they would be facing each other in the penultimate game week, a draw would be ideal for both to stay since United won’t be able to overtake them (due to goal difference) and West Ham wouldn’t be a concern anyway.
United need to win all of their games as well to give a good fight for the top 4, one loss and they would be counting on either city or arsenal to lose at least twice and win once, or to not win at all, which, given the opponents, would be a tough job. More than one loss would see them asking for either city or arsenal to lose all three of their games, which would need a miracle. As far as draws are concerned, one draw would be the same case as one loss.
So United must win all games to secure a position with least help from Arsenal or City
West Ham have a simpler situation, they are counting on city or arsenal to not win a game, even if they do, lose the rest, and on united to draw or lose at least two games
West Ham United
Whatever happens, the battle for the top 4 is going to be enjoyable, who according to you will make it?
